Kia ora from Auckland! (Jul 2024)

This summer (or is it winter?), I find myself in Middle Earth! After 17 hours on a Qantas flight from JFK, our tired group from the Young People's Chorus of New York landed in Auckland. We are here to proudly represent the US at the 13th annual World Choir Games. With over 45 countries participating, this is the Olympics of chorus singing, and our group are seasoned veterans! Last year, we won 5 Gold medals at this event in South Korea. So, the expectations are high this year as well.

For now though, a few days to relax and take in the gorgeous natural beauty of this incredibly welcoming country. Our first stop was Rotorua, and the Māori village of Ohinemutu. This place is home to the Ngati Whakaue tribe, who originally arrived in New Zealand around 1350AD. The tribe was gracious enough to let us use their marae as our rehearsal space, but first we have to take part in a traditional Powhiri welcome.

Jet lag is slowly wearing off, and we are gearing up for the competitions. I have already bought a vintage Maori ring to bring back home, and have bonded with friends from around the world, some that I recognized from South Korea last year! Hoping to break a leg soon!
