OUR MISSION
Mission Statement
My goal at STEM to STEMM is to integrate music into the academic and personal lives of students. I accomplish this by exposing students to the joy of music, and educating them about the close links between neuroscience and music.
On this website, I curate music education resources and institutions in the community for students of all levels. Additionally, I demystify the scientific research that illustrates the benefits of music. Through the blog, I share my own personal journey and experiences with music and science. I also host in-person workshops for kids and parents, where I explore the richness of music together, play with instruments, and learn about how Music and STEM are closely connected.
Scientific evidence suggests that young people who practice and develop their sense of music and rhythm enhance their performance in various aspects of life - school, academic or professional. During the COVID-19 pandemic, large numbers of kids were either left behind academically or have struggled to cope with mental health issues. I believe that if our education system had music at its core, some of these challenges would have been mitigated. This is why I have an extra M in STEMM - to move our focus from STEM to STEMM!
My Bio
Mili is a Senior at Secaucus, New Jersey's High Tech High School’s Biomedical Academy. She has been a committed musician for more than ten years, attending pre-college at the Mannes School of Music and is a member of the Young People's Chorus of New York City (YPC). She wants to work at the intersection of research and clinical medicine - neurobiology, or psychology. She finds the functioning of the brain and how little is known about it to be fascinating. She enjoys reading, watching movies, and listening to music. She hopes to combine her love of music with her fascination of neuroscience. STEM to STEMM is closely reflective of her own life’s journey. Music - in various rich forms - has influenced her deeply, helped her succeed at school, and kept her balanced.
Mili has been recognized for her efforts through the 2024 NJ State Governor’s Volunteerism Awards. In summer of 2024, she will be interning at the Center for Genomics of Neurodegenerative Disease at the NY Genome Center in New York City.
